Greetings and Happy New Year ASHE Region 9,
It’s a bit embarrassing as I sit to gather my thoughts for this my first ASHE Region 9 newsletter to you all. I could use the excuse that 2020 was an incredibly crazy year and I have just not had the time, or I could boast that ASHE does such a great job with their own communications – who needs to hear from me? What I really want to do is not make any excuses for my lack of communication to Region 9 ASHE members, but to share my greatest admiration and appreciation for all that each of you do to support your organizations, your local chapters and especially your families. This past year has no doubt challenged each of us in uncountable ways. Many have been sick, many have lost friends and family to this novel coronavirus; all of us have been challenged, scared, depressed and just not sure what was coming next. Currently we are amid distribution of a vaccine that we all hope will bring our lives back to some sort of normalcy. With this Region 9 letter, I want to highlight the great resources and support ASHE has provided its membership this past year, and I want to recognize some of the terrific work our members and chapters have accomplished. Finally, I want to encourage each of you to have faith in yourself, your neighbors and your colleagues that we will get through this stronger.
I look forward to supporting all of Region 9 in any way that I can. If you are looking to get certified, please reach out. If your chapter is looking for support with your meetings, presentations or annual conference, reach out. If there is anything I or the ASHE organization can do for you and your chapters, please let me know, and I will do everything I can to help and support you all. This new year, I look forward to supporting each of you and your chapters as we continue to get better at everything we do to support the health and safety of our members and communities we serve. Thank you for all that you do.
I want to recognize and give a shout out of congratulations to the individuals who achieved the following certifications and recognition.
- Matthew Maynard, Trades Supervisor, Tucson, AZ
- Ben Cossette, Director of Plant Operations, Palmdale, CA
- Bikrun Bhangon, Fresno, CA
- Jerry North, Senior Director Facilities and Engineering, Salt Lake City, UT
- Trent Cutler, Design and Construction Manager, Salt Lake City, UT
- Will Davis, Senior Superintendent, Sacramento, CA
As for all our Region 9 chapters who have worked very hard, I want to recognize them for their accomplishments in achieving these ASHE chapter awards.
- Arizona Society for Healthcare Engineering, Platinum Level
- California Society for Healthcare Engineering, Inc., Platinum Elite Level
- Central Arizona Society for Healthcare Engineering, Silver Level
- Utah Society for Healthcare Engineering, Platinum Elite Level
I want to give a big congratulations to Larry Knowlden from Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City, UT. Larry was awarded the Regional Leader Award for Region 9. This is a well-deserved award for Larry and his impressive leadership to the Utah chapter and our profession. Well done!
Lastly for the ASHE awards and recognition, a huge shout out to the CSHE chapter for their third Energy to Care Chapter Challenge award! This is not an easy award to win as it takes a great deal of combined work from a great group of dedicated facility leaders. This year’s win was a tie in the Large Category with the Ohio chapter, but a win is a win, so congratulations to CSHE. However, it does not stop there. Also recognized from Region 9 were 104 different facilities in California and 4 from Utah who obtained Energy to Care recognition for their annual energy performance. Way to go, Region 9!
What a great way to close out 2020, with recognition of a great deal of impressive work. Speaking of great work, please check out all the great work ASHE has done to support its members through COVID-19. Please visit the ASHE website for more details.
Lastly, as you start planning and preparing for 2021, please think about your education, advocacy and certification through ASHE. ASHE has many programs and networking opportunities for your leadership growth as well as lots of educational information for your chapters. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please reach out to me. Here’s to a great 2021, I hope to join you on a virtual call, training, and most importantly in person sometime this year.
Be safe and thrive,
Dave Lockhart, CHFM, CEM, FASHE
